But questions about law enforcement misconduct and accountability have become a central concern in recent years, following a string of high-profile police shootings and debate over such things as stop-and-frisk, profiling, and surveillance. How can we assure the effectiveness of policing, but also minimize its risks? What aspects of policing need fixing, what do those fixes look like, and what is the likelihood of achieving change? This program brings together leading change agents from Black Lives Matter and Right on Crime, as well as a prominent journalist who has covered the issues, moderated by the director of NYU Law’s own Policing Project.

NICE FRANCE ATTACK – TERRORISTS DRIVES TRUCK INTO CROWD DOZENS DEAD
A truck has struck a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the southern French city of Nice, killing about 60 people, officials are quoted as saying by local media.
The incident took place on the famous Promenade des Anglais during a firework display.
One image on Twitter showed about a dozen people lying on the street.
The local prefecture has urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident “an attack”.
Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that “a lorry driver appears to have killed dozens of people”.
Sebastien Humbert, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes region, told France’s BFM TV that the lorry driver had been shot dead.
French media later quoted Nice prosecutors as saying that about 60 people were dead.

LANCASTER, OH – A Lancaster police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked him twice while he was responding to a dog bite complaint around 8:45 PM Thursday in the 600 block north of High Street.
Officer Alex Sinewe was responded to the call after a dog from the residence bit a 24 year-old man leaving the apartment next door in the leg. As he was talking to the resident about putting the dogs away, two dogs escape from the house, one of which attacks Sinewe. After going onto the sidewalk, the more aggressive dog attempts to attack Sinewe again, resulting in him firing nine rounds and killing the dog.
The resident of the house was reportedly not the owner of the dogs. Officer Sinewe was bitten multiple times and went to the Fairfield Medical Center for treatment. The Lancaster Police Department reviewed Officer Sinewe’s use of force and deemed it appropriate, and also said that it was testing the dog for rabies.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday identified the suspect shot and wounded during a gun battle with deputies the previous day.
Hector Javier Puga, 26, remained hospitalized in fair condition, the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.
Puga had allegedly pointed a gun at deputies before being shot following a dangerous pursuit through South Los Angeles residential streets late Friday afternoon.
After being hit in the upper torso by gunfire, Puga walked toward a nearby residence and collapsed on the front porch, his white-T-shirt stained with blood, aerial video showed.
About an hour later, he surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody without further incident, according to the release.
The Sheriff’s Department later said that Puga had been wanted in connection with a March 8 kidnapping in which he was accused of forcing his wife into a vehicle at gunpoint in the city of Paramount, officials said.
The woman managed to escape after he stopped at her’s mother’s house so she could use the bathroom, according to the release.
Deputies saw Puga’s vehicle Friday and began pursuing him after he failed to stop, the release stated.
An investigation into the incident was ongoing, the department said.
